Installing flow restrictors is easy to report; demonstrating that they improved performance requires a baseline and a comparable follow-up. In a hotel, water use varies with occupancy, room mix, housekeeping, kitchen service and irrigation. Measure where the device was installed, whether it still meets the required guest experience and whether the observed change is large enough to justify further work.

Record a baseline before fitting
Identify fixture type, outlet, pressure, existing flow and representative operating conditions. Measure a sample using a consistent method and safe equipment, or use a qualified technician. Record occupancy and any maintenance changes at the same time. Without a baseline, a later reading cannot show what the restrictor changed.
Include user experience in the baseline: spray pattern, time to rinse, temperature stability and complaints. A device can lower flow yet create longer use or a poor experience. The goal is efficient service at an acceptable performance level, not the lowest possible number.
Test comparable fixtures and periods
Use a defined sample across room types, floors or public areas. Measure at similar pressure and with the same test procedure. Avoid comparing an occupied high-use week with an empty period and attributing the whole difference to the device. Note units, sample size, date and who performed the measurement.
If the property has sub-meters, define the area they cover and whether other uses share the circuit. A whole-building meter may reveal a trend but cannot isolate a small fixture change. Where there is no reliable sub-meter, combine limited field measurements with cautious interpretation of the main meter.
Check performance and maintenance
After installation, inspect for leaks, blockage, scaling, loose fittings and inconsistent flow. Confirm that hot and cold controls remain stable and the fixture is usable by guests with different needs. The manufacturer’s instructions and the property’s water-safety procedures take precedence over an assumed standard flow value.
Ask housekeeping and maintenance to report repeated cleaning issues, longer turnover or guest comments. These are operational signals, not proof of causation. A restrictor that clogs in hard-water conditions may need a compatible maintenance interval or a different product.
Calculate savings without overclaiming
Estimate water and water-heating energy effects only when the measured change and actual use are known. Show the calculation, tariff, temperature assumptions, hours of use and uncertainty. Do not multiply a single tap test by every room and every day unless the property has evidence that those assumptions hold.
Separate measured results from projections. A pilot across a limited number of rooms can reveal installation and experience issues before wider rollout. Review enough operating periods to account for occupancy and seasonal variation, then decide whether expansion is warranted.
Protect hygiene and accessibility
Do not reduce flow or temperature controls in a way that compromises hygiene, water safety, accessibility or manufacturer requirements. Get technical review where the fixture serves a clinical, food-preparation or other controlled use. If the installation changes hot-water performance, consult the person responsible for water safety before proceeding.
Provide an exception path for a documented accessibility or service need. Avoid making staff remove devices informally; changes should be approved, tracked and tested. A consistent policy can still accommodate a room where a different fitting is necessary.
Turn results into a maintenance routine
Record product model, location, install date, measured outcome, complaints and service checks. Set a review date to compare performance and inspect representative devices. If the measured effect disappears, check for leaks, bypasses, changes in occupancy or measurement error before purchasing more equipment.
Use the findings to update purchasing specifications and staff instructions. The AQUA+ Hotels framework can help a property assess water uses as a system, but a rating or programme does not replace local measurements. Keep the evidence simple enough that the team will maintain it.
